Rhinoplasty procedures are rising in popularity all around the world. There’s some evidence the rise in people wanting a nose job may be because of selfies.
Selfies are photos people take of themselves usually with their smartphone. These photos are then published on social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.
When people take a selfie, they usually take a minute to examine it before publishing it online. This is because they want to check their hair or make sure the dreaded “forehead shine” isn’t an issue. People who are self-critical may see their noses as the problem in the photo. The more selfies people take, the more they may bend toward the opinion that they don’t like their nose.
Once people identify a body part they are not satisfied with, the problem magnifies as time goes on. Since selfies are such a big deal these days, every time people with a nose they are unhappy with take a picture, all they see is a nose with aspects that they pick apart. This can lead them to seek plastic surgery.
Actually, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) recently conducted a study with plastic surgeons. One out of three plastic surgeons report they’ve had an increase in rhinoplasty patients. The reason that many of those patients sought nose jobs was so they could look better online.
It’s mainly young people who are most concerned about their looks online. Fifty-eight percent of the plastic surgeons surveyed by AAFPRS reported a rise in rhinoplasty patients under the age of 30.
Why Selfies Are So Important to the Younger Crowd
Selfies are important these days because it’s a way to create an identity. As people make different faces and take photos of themselves with their friends or in favorite places, they start to show the online world who they are and what they like. Avoiding selfies is likened to isolating oneself in the social media realm.
People don’t want to isolate. They want to show themselves off…and they want to look good doing it. With rhinoplasty being a viable option these days, people are turning to it more often than before.
