Many people wonder how long it takes to recover from rhinoplasty. They want to prepare for the procedure so they know how much time they will likely need to take off from work. If you’re wondering the same thing, we have answers for you.
A nose job, or rhinoplasty, is a plastic surgery that can help people aesthetically and functionally. It can change the shape, size or angle to produce a more appealing version of the original. It can also make it easier for people to breathe.
How Long It Takes to Recover from a Nose Job
We understand you probably want to know exactly how long it will take to recover from a nose job, but the answer is: It depends. Every surgery is different. Facial plastic surgeons sometimes need to do much more to a nose to correct issues than originally anticipated. In those cases, there is a lengthier recovery time. For other patients, recovery time is shorter due to less work needing to be done.
For most people, one to two weeks off from work is enough time. However, depending upon how much work was done, there could be significant swelling even a week after surgery. It generally takes two or more weeks for the initial swelling to go down. Approximately 70 percent of people no longer see external swelling by three weeks.
If your work is strenuous or you enjoy hard workouts, we recommend waiting at least four weeks before resuming those activities. The nose will still be tender and vulnerable up to this point. Being overly active may result in pain or even damage to the nose if you don’t wait until it has completely healed. Always get clearance from your plastic surgeon before getting back into the swing of things.
While acute recovery time takes up to four weeks, the final results of a rhinoplasty take up to 12 months to see. That’s not to say you won’t see results after the swelling goes down, but it’s good to keep in mind that as your nose heals, you will continue to see desirable changes.
What Can Cause a Longer Recovery Time
Recovery times often have to do with the technique used. For those who undergo a surgery with a “closed” technique, the incisions are only on the inside of the nose. Those with an “open” technique have incisions on the outside of the nose right between the nostrils.
The latter technique often leads to longer recovery time. Nasal bone adjustments, septum repair, tip contouring, and cartilage grafts also can add to the amount of time it takes for patients to recover from a rhinoplasty.
