Rhinoplasty, or nose job surgery, is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the U.S. In 2014, more than 217,000 Americans had their noses reshaped (source: ASPS), either for cosmetic reasons or to correct structural abnormalities that caused breathing problems. By nature, rhinoplasty is a very complex procedure, and should only be performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon. The Cosmetic Surgery Team at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York has been performing rhinoplasty for many years and is highly experienced with the intricacies of this surgery.
What Rhinoplasty Can Accomplish
Rhinoplasty can serve two purposes. More often than not, it is performed to address an aesthetic imperfection in the nose. Common rhinoplasty goals include:
- Smooth a bump on the bridge of the nose
- Correct an off-center, crooked or asymmetrical nose
- Refine a bulbous or drooping tip
- Refine the nostrils
- Fix asymmetry
Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
The Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team meets with every potential candidate during a pre-operative consultation to discuss whether the surgery is a good fit.
In general, rhinoplasty is suitable for individuals who:
- Are in good physical and psychological health
- Are unhappy with the appearance of their nose
- Desire improvement, not necessarily perfect results
- Understand the possible risks and rewards of the surgery
Types of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is always customized to the unique functional and aesthetic needs of the patient. While the procedure is often performed for aesthetic reasons — for example, to refine the nasal bridge, tip or nostrils — it can also be performed to correct structural abnormalities in the nose that impair breathing function, as can related procedures such as septoplasty. Another type of rhinoplasty procedure, called revision rhinoplasty, repairs the results of a previous nose surgery.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed on an outpatient basis at one of our accredited surgical facilities. Our surgeon makes the incisions either across the strip of skin separating the nostrils or inside the nostrils and modifies the bone, cartilage or tissues to achieve the desired results. The length of surgery depends on the particular treatment plan and degree of correction necessary.
Recovering from Rhinoplasty
It’s common for the nose to be swollen and bruised after nose job surgery, but these side effects will disappear gradually. The Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team may place a splint to support the nasal structures for the first week after surgery. Most patients feel comfortable returning to school or work within a week or two.
Our rhinoplasty patients usually have a lot of questions about the surgery and what to expect. Read through our frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty.
