Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today. As one of the most conspicuous of the facial features, it’s not surprising that many individuals want to change the size or shape of their nose if they find it unattractive or out of balance with other facial features.
At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York, our nose job NY surgeons have helped many patients improve not only the appearance of the nose but their self-confidence as well.
But what about teens who want a nose job? When it comes to teens and cosmetic surgery, there are special considerations which must be taken into account.
Teens Seeking a Nose Job Should Read this First
The Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team has seen many teens over the years that are looking to get a nose job. In fact, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, rhinoplasty was the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed on patients under the age of 21.
Some teens want to have a nose job as a sweet 16 or high school graduation gift, but it’s important to be cautious when it comes to teens and rhinoplasty.
While a nose job can help teens to overcome self-image issues, it should only be performed if patients are appropriate candidates.
As with any surgery there are potential risks and complications and it’s important that the potential benefits of surgery outweigh the potential complications.
A teen must first meet with a qualified and Board Certified plastic surgeon for a consultation to discuss their goals and desires and carefully determine whether a nose job is right for them.
Some questions to consider:
- Is the patient’s nose done growing?
- Is the patient involved in any sports or other activities that would put the nose at risk for injury after surgery?
- Is the patient prepared to show up to all follow up appointments after surgery and follow post-op directions exactly?
Determining Candidacy in Teens Seeking a Nose Job
At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York, we generally recommend that younger patients wait to undergo rhinoplasty surgery until the nose has reached its adult size. This generally occurs around the age of 15 or 16 in girls. For boys, this may occur a year or so later.
There may be exceptions to this, for instance in patients with deformities related to injury or accident or in those with breathing problems. If surgery is performed too early, however, the changes made to the nose may be altered or ruined due to continued growth of the nose.
The Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team will also consider the patients’ emotional state and level of maturity to determine if they are mature enough emotionally to handle surgery, the physical changes that result, and the rigors of follow up care. Further, if patients are depressed, rhinoplasty will not resolve this.
When performed in appropriate teen patients, rhinoplasty can be very successful. If you are seeking a nose job in New York or would like to schedule a consultation with our rhinoplasty NYC or Long Island specialists on the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team, contact us today.
