Safety Concerns with Rising Rates of Medical Tourism | Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of NY

There’s a growing trend in medical tourism. Americans are traveling to foreign countries such as Thailand, Mexico, and South Korea for low cost rhinoplasty and breast augmentation. People are motivated to do this because they find the costs are more affordable than in the U.S. The problem is that the lower costs are blinding them to safety concerns.

In the past, people abroad would come to the United States for surgeries because of the high quality care. Things have changed now, according to Science Daily’s report in a new article published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global One.

People are no longer valuing high quality care as much anymore; instead, they value their money far more, so they are going abroad for cosmetic surgeries.

Some of the most common places for medical tourism are Mexico, Dubai, South Africa, Thailand, Singapore, and India. One million medical tourists have visited India this year alone!

While these countries claim that their surgeons are highly qualified and their surgical facilities are safe, there isn’t much evidence supporting this. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has said this about medical tourism:

Patients may take unnecessary risks, when choosing cosmetic surgery vacations, by unknowingly selecting unqualified physicians and having procedures performed by non-accredited surgical facilities.

The ASPS wants people considering cosmetic surgery vacations to know that the U.S. doesn’t extend its health and safety laws beyond its border. According to the association, if someone is injured overseas, they may not have any legal rights, as they would in the United States.

Some of the complications from rhinoplasty surgery could be:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Poor wound healing
  • Numbness
  • Alterations to the nasal airway passages causing temporary or permanent discomfort
  • Problems with the looks of the nose following surgery
  • Pain
  • Irritation

Travel, inexperienced surgeons, and unsafe practices can all increase the risk of these complications, which is one of the reasons why medical tourism can be extremely dangerous.

Monitoring and follow-up care can be severely limited, and for some patients they are never seen again after surgery. If there are complications, patients must return to the U.S. and find a new plastic surgeon willing to see them.

Cosmetic surgery is a serious endeavor, just as any other surgery would be. It’s important to treat it this way by seeking a highly qualified cosmetic or plastic surgeon performing surgery in an accredited surgical facility in the United States.
